My wine journey

In the beginning…I trained as a a Registered General Nurse in 1990, and this was my chosen career for 25 years before I quit due to professional burnout. I knew that my life’s purpose was to help people so initially started a health-related business in aromatherapy. This pottered along until someone pointed out that this was not my passion. I could still help people in a totally different field. One I was passionate about. Wine.

I knew they were right; I didn’t just enjoy drinking wine; I was educated formally in wine. In 2001, I passed the Wines and Spirits Education Trust Level 2 exam just for fun. I loved learning about the terroir and grape varieties from around the world. I loved the stories that the tutor told of his experiences. I never imagined a career in the wine industry.

Twenty years later, an opportunity presented itself during the pandemic. The John Lewis Partnership needed online wine tutors. I nervously joined the team and reignited my passion. I then moved into the wine department in my local Waitrose and qualified as a Beer, Wines and Spirits Specialist.

I had done the unthinkable – changed career. Everyone I spoke to outside my part time employment wanted to know more about my wine knowledge. I loved sharing my experiences and knowledge outside of Waitrose too. My passion continues to help people learn more about wine every day of the week from giving presentations to delivering tasting experiences.

I have a special fondness for English wines and have visited many vineyards. I love the behind-the-scenes stories, the passion of those highly qualified guides and the nectar in the glass that follows. And as a nod to my previous career, I am also a supporter of low and no alcoholic drinks – I know the perfect drink for everyone!
